Two cool things: The Malibu Hybrid gets 26 mpg in the city and 34 on the
highway, which is good, although it costs about $4000 more than the base Malibu
with the same 4-cylinder engine. And, the revvy 2.4-liter engine will now run on
E85 ethanol, which you can find anywhere in the Corn Belt. Currently, at today’s
fuel costs and average driving distances, we figure it would take about 13 years
to break even on the Hybrid’s extra cost, more if you ran E85. But, who can tell
the future? Should gasoline rise in price, our calculations would vanish.
Another fine attribute of the Malibu is its light curb weight for a midsize car,
which enhances its nimbleness and makes it feel like Accord or Camry base
models.
